Terramation

What Is Terramation?

Terramation — also called natural organic reduction, or human composting — is a newer end-of-life option that gently transforms the body into soil over several weeks, through a natural process of decomposition inside a controlled vessel. At the end of the process, families receive nutrient-rich soil, which can be used to nourish a garden, a tree, or donated to conservation land.

We help facilitate terramation for families in Illinois — even though the process doesn't currently take place at our own location. As licensed funeral directors, we handle the logistics, paperwork, and coordination with a terramation facility on your behalf, so you don't have to navigate it alone.

An Honest Conversation We Like to Have

Because terramation is still new, and because we believe in giving people the full picture — not just the parts that make for a good pitch — we want to share something that's important to keep in mind.

Terramation requires transporting your loved one out of state, since there is currently no terramation facility operating near our location in northern Illinois. That transportation carries its own environmental footprint — one that's worth weighing against the alternative.

Natural burial, by comparison, happens right here, locally — no long-distance transport, just a body returning to the earth in the simplest way possible, the way people have done for most of human history.

We're not telling you this to talk you out of terramation. Some families have specific reasons to choose terramation and we're glad to help make that happen. We just believe you deserve to make that decision with the full picture in front of you.
